As concerns grow around skills shortages, youth unemployment and access to education, a coalition of training provider leaders and employers across Dorset has written to the Secretary of State for Education calling for urgent reform of the current 16–19 funding system.
The letter highlights the challenges facing colleges and training providers as learner numbers continue to rise, warning that without greater flexibility in funding, opportunities for young people could be put at risk.
The concerns closely reflect issues we explored in our recent article, Young People Are Leaving School Unfit for the Workplace. While employers continue to report challenges recruiting job-ready young people, education providers are facing increasing pressure in delivering the training, qualifications and employability support needed to bridge that gap.
The Dorset coalition is calling for:
- Greater flexibility for providers exceeding enrolment allocations
- Recognition of the financial pressures facing further education
- A review of the current funding model
- Protection of access to education and training for young people
With the number of young people not in education, employment or training (NEET) remaining a significant concern, limiting access to further education risks creating further barriers to employment and skills development.
Education providers play a vital role in helping young people gain the confidence, experience and workplace skills employers need. If the Government is serious about tackling skills shortages and supporting economic growth, funding systems must be able to respond to real-time demand.
The message from Dorset’s education providers and employers is clear: they stand ready to support young people and local businesses, but they need a funding framework that enables opportunity rather than restricts it.
