From Disengaged to Determined: Carl’s Journey Towards Skills, Confidence and a Career.

When the Dorset Council EET Tracking Team first contacted Carl*, he was unsure about his next steps and had no formal qualifications. Having left school early due to bullying and later struggling with home learning during Covid, Carl lacked confidence and felt uncertain about his future.

In April 2025, Carl reached out for support. During an informal meeting, he shared his interest in practical, hands-on work and reflected on his experiences of education.

“I wish I’d stayed in school and ignored the bullies,” Carl said.

At this stage, Carl had no qualifications and low self-esteem. He was introduced to the Study Programme at Elevate Employment Services (previously Whitehead-Ross Education), where he could work towards Maths and English qualifications while developing employability skills. With reassurance and support, Carl attended his initial appointment and decided to enrol.

Building Confidence Through Support

Carl started the programme in July 2025 and quickly began to thrive. He worked towards Entry Level 3 Maths and English and completed work experience in a charity shop — something he was initially unsure about.

“I didn’t think I’d enjoy it, but I liked doing practical tasks and talking to other staff. It made me more confident.”

The tailored support and small class sizes at Elevate Employment Services were particularly beneficial for Carl, who has dyslexia. Within weeks, his confidence visibly increased. He passed Entry Level 3 Maths and later completed Entry Level 3 English, including Reading and Writing.

Progression into Further Education

With encouragement from staff, Carl applied for a Level 1 Construction course at Weymouth College. Although he felt anxious about starting college, he was reassured that ongoing support would remain available.

“Lots of young people feel nervous starting something new — you don’t have to do it alone.”

Carl began college in September and is now thriving. He is studying GCSE Maths and English as part of a multi-skills programme and has discovered a strong interest in electrical work, which he hopes to pursue further in his second year.

Alongside his studies, Carl is actively looking for part-time work and has received help with his CV and job applications. He is highly motivated, with clear goals for independence, including saving for a CBT motorbike course to improve his mobility and job prospects.

Celebrating Every Step Forward

When Carl was first supported, he was anxious, disengaged from education and unsure of his future. Through consistent encouragement, integrated working and tailored support from Elevate Employment Services and partner organisations, he has built confidence, achieved qualifications and progressed into further education.

Carl’s journey shows that success doesn’t always start with an apprenticeship — and that with the right support, young people can build confidence, skills and direction at their own pace.

“I feel more confident now — I know what I want to work towards.”
