This Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment qualification is for learners wishing to apply for the Construction Skills Certification Scheme Green Card.
The CSCS Green Card is intended for those working in labouring occupations only. CSCS introduced a requirement for applicants to achieve a formal knowledge based qualification, the ‘Health and Safety in a Construction Environment’ Award. Achievement of this award will demonstrate the applicant’s understanding of key issues affecting safe working practices on UK construction sites.
The qualification was developed in conjunction with CITB and CSCS UK Ltd.

Target audience
This qualification is for learners wishing to qualify for the CSCS UK Ltd Green Card to access construction sites in the UK as a non-skilled worker.
Programme overview
The qualification covers the health and safety knowledge that is required to gain a CSCS Green Card for access to construction sites in the UK.
All participants will have the opportunity to complete the CITB (Construction Industry Training Board) Health & Safety and Environment Test which is funded (1 attempt per learner).
As part of the course, participants will also complete an Employability Award module to assist with workplace suitability employment opportunities.

This is a City & Guilds Level 1 Award in Health & Safety in a Construction Environment, which meets the requirements to apply for the CSCS Green Labourer Card (the standard entry-level card for non-skilled labourers on UK construction sites)
CITB HS&E test preparation: Covers the knowledge required to pass the mandatory Health, Safety & Environment touchscreen test.
Career Pathways
Completing the course and obtaining the card opens the door to several onward journeys:
1. On-Site Work as a Labourer
Start working in roles like labouring, construction, brick laying, scaffolding – critical for entry-level positions on construction sites.
2. Access to Further Training
After gaining experience, you can progress to:

Trainee Cards: As of February 1, 2025, holding a Level 2 (or above) occupation-related non‑competence qualification qualifies you for a CSCS Trainee card, valid up to two years—indicating you’re on a recognised path toward higher certification.

NVQ/SVQ Qualifications: Enrol in trades-level NVQ (e.g., bricklaying, carpentry), leading to a CSCS Skilled Worker (Blue) Card.

Site Supervisor or Manager: Further qualifications and experience can lead to supervisory (Gold card, SSSTS) or management (Black card, SMSTS) roles with responsibility for site planning, safety, and delivery.
