One young person had planned to go to college, but things didn’t work out as expected. Looking for other options, they visited the Merthyr Tydfil Centre to find out more about Jobs Growth Wales+.
They were really interested in hospitality but worried about the lack of local opportunities. Despite this, they stayed motivated and focused on building their skills. Through the programme, they completed key qualifications, including Employability and Food Safety.
They also gained valuable hands-on experience through a placement in a local café, where they developed practical skills and grew in confidence.
Thanks to their hard work and progress, they successfully secured a job in the hospitality sector—showing how the right support and experience can help young people achieve their goals.

Another learner had been attending college, but travel challenges meant they couldn’t continue. With support from a parent, they visited our centre to explore other options through Jobs Growth Wales+.
At the start, they struggled with low confidence, anxiety, and self-esteem. A more flexible, hands-on approach to learning really helped, along with regular wellbeing check-ins and ongoing support.
During the programme, they completed a work placement in construction, where they gained practical skills, real-world experience, and began to feel more confident.
With their growing confidence and commitment, they went on to secure a job with their placement provider—showing how the right support and opportunities can help overcome barriers and lead to lasting employment.
